When you’re a kid, there’s nothing better than an activity book - puzzles, games, stickers, the lot. But what if your activity book could also teach you some essential life skills?

That’s the idea behind First Aid with Bertie - or FAB - a brand new product we helped develop for St John Ambulance.

As part of the new brand rollout for England’s leading first aid charity, Lark were asked to create a fundraising product for children aged 5-11-years-old. Something to teach them simple first aid skills but without feeling too ‘worthy’.

Illustration style

We worked closely with the team at St John Ambulance to name and develop the concept of a regular subscriber kit, then started work on creating a new illustration style for Bertie Badger.

The friendly, cartoon-style replaced the various versions different teams had created for their mascot over the years, giving Bertie a more modern look and feel.

Then we turned our attention to creating the First Aid with Bertie activity books.

FAB is currently a pilot scheme for St John Ambulance, but if subscribers have as much fun doing the wordsearches as we did writing them, we predict a long, healthy future for Bertie and all his accident-prone friends!

Activity books

Each book follows the adventures of Bertie and his friends (with plenty of ouchies, obviously), along with educational tasks and challenges for curious young minds.

The idea is to cover a few first aid topics - like how to treat a burn or bee sting - every month, slowly building children’s self confidence and first aid knowledge.

Subscribers also get some fun stickers with each FAB activity book, and will receive their own cuddly Bertie toy after six months.
